Have no fear. Here are some great activities to do with your kids during load-shedding that will keep boredom at bay.

Play family memory charades

You get the basic concept: Each person (or team) has to act out a scene from one of your family’s vacations, holidays, or just a memorable event and the rest of the family has to guess.

No talking allowed!

Draw a movie

Your kids can’t watch a movie, with the DVD player and TV being, being electrically challenged and all.

But you do likely have some paper and colouring supplies on hand: Choose a favourite family film and have each of you draw a scene.

Line up those sheets chronologically, then choose a narrator to tell the story frame-by-frame.

Torch scavenger hunt

Come up with a list of things you know can be found safely in the dark — probably should skip things that require ladders for this game — then set the kids searching, torches in hand.

Great items to include in your scavenger hunt are: a metal spoon, the dog’s pink blanket; my green striped socks; an apple from the fruit bowl.

Now wait and listen out as those choruses of, “I’m booooorrrrredddd” turn into giggles and shouts of, “Yaaaaaaaaaaay!” Now go ahead and put that book down and join in with your kids.
